A Bendixson-Dulac theorem for some piecewise systems
The Bendixson-Dulac Theorem provides a criterion to find upper bounds for the number of limit cycles in analytic differential systems. We extend this classical result to some classes of piecewise differential systems. We apply it to three different LiĂŠnard piecewise differential systems ¨ x+fÂą(x)Ë x+x = 0. The first is linear, the second is rational and the last corresponds to a particular extension of the cubic van der Pol oscillator. In all cases, the systems present regions in the parameter space with no limit cycles and others having at most one
New lower bound for the Hilbert number in low degree Kolmogorov systems
Our main goal in this paper is to study the number of small-amplitude
isolated periodic orbits, so-called limit cycles, surrounding only one
equilibrium point a class of polynomial Kolmogorov systems. We denote by
the maximum number of limit cycles bifurcating from the
equilibrium point via a degenerate Hopf bifurcation for a polynomial Kolmogorov
vector field of degree . In this work, we obtain another example such that . In addition, we obtain new lower bounds for proving that and
ďťżTrophic ecology of Gymnodactylus geckoides Spix, 1825 (Squamata, Phyllodactylidae) from Caatinga, Northeastern Brazil
The diet of lizards is mainly composed of arthropods. It can be affected by biotic and abiotic factors, which influence the energy supply provided by the composition of the animal´s diet. The richness and abundance of many arthropod species can be influenced by environmental seasonality, especially in the Caatinga ecoregion, due to the rainfall regimes. The present study aims to describe aspects of the seasonal and morphological variation in the lizard Gymnodactylus geckoides diet and their energy content. We collected 157 individuals (63 females, 68 males, and 26 juveniles) at the Catimbau National Park, Northeastern Brazil, of which 72 were analyzed for the dry season and 59 for the rainy season. Our data indicates Isoptera to be the most common prey in G. geckoidesâs diet. Energy content, prey number was higher in the dry season, whereas prey volume and glycogen content increased in the rainy season. Proteins and lipids did not show marked differences. The present study represents the first effort to understand variations in G. geckoideâs trophic ecology, indicating that this specie presents a wide variation in their diet, especially when considering seasonal factors, revealing their needs and restrictions according to prey availability and environmental conditions
Hemocyanin facilitates lignocellulose digestion by wood-boring marine crustaceans
Woody (lignocellulosic) plant biomass is an abundant renewable feedstock, rich in polysaccharides that are bound into an insoluble fiber composite with lignin. Marine crustacean woodborers of the genus Limnoria are among the few animals that can survive on a diet of this recalcitrant material without relying on gut resident microbiota. Analysis of fecal pellets revealed that Limnoria targets hexose-containing polysaccharides (mainly cellulose, and also glucomannans), corresponding with the abundance of cellulases in their digestive system, but xylans and lignin are largely unconsumed. We show that the limnoriid respiratory protein, hemocyanin, is abundant in the hindgut where wood is digested, that incubation of wood with hemocyanin markedly enhances its digestibility by cellulases, and that it modifies lignin. We propose that this activity of hemocyanins is instrumental to the ability of Limnoria to feed on wood in the absence of gut symbionts. These findings may hold potential for innovations in lignocellulose biorefining
Evidence for the exclusive decay Bc+- to J/psi pi+- and measurement of the mass of the Bc meson
We report first evidence for a fully reconstructed decay mode of the
B_c^{\pm} meson in the channel B_c^{\pm} \to J/psi \pi^{\pm}, with J/psi \to
mu^+mu^-. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 360 pb$^{-1} in
p\bar{p} collisions at 1.96 TeV center of mass energy collected by the Collider
Detector at Fermilab. We observe 14.6 \pm 4.6 signal events with a background
of 7.1 \pm 0.9 events, and a fit to the J/psi pi^{\pm} mass spectrum yields a
B_c^{\pm} mass of 6285.7 \pm 5.3(stat) \pm 1.2(syst) MeV/c^2. The probability
of a peak of this magnitude occurring by random fluctuation in the search
region is estimated as 0.012%.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Version 3, accepted by PR
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in
ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using 318 pb^{-1} of data collected with
the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select ttbar decays into the final states
e nu + jets and mu nu + jets, in which at least one b quark from the t-quark
decays is identified using a secondary vertex-finding algorithm. Assuming a top
quark mass of 178 GeV/c^2, we measure a cross section of 8.7 +-0.9 (stat)
+1.1-0.9 (syst) pb. We also report the first observation of ttbar with
significance greater than 5 sigma in the subsample in which both b quarks are
identified, corresponding to a cross section of 10.1 +1.6-1.4(stat)+2.0-1.3
(syst) pb.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Review Letters, 7 page
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Search for New Physics with Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least
three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data
sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns
collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector
at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model
backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are
presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard
model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new
particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets
Top quark mass measurement using the template method at CDF
We present a measurement of the top quark mass in the lepton+jets and
dilepton channels of decays using the template method. The data
sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb of
collisions at Tevatron with TeV, collected with the CDF II
detector. The measurement is performed by constructing templates of three
kinematic variables in the lepton+jets and two kinematic variables in the
dilepton channel. The variables are two reconstructed top quark masses from
different jets-to-quarks combinations and the invariant mass of two jets from
the decay in the lepton+jets channel, and a reconstructed top quark mass
and , a variable related to the transverse mass in events with two
missing particles, in the dilepton channel. The simultaneous fit of the
templates from signal and background events in the lepton+jets and dilepton
channels to the data yields a measured top quark mass of Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of
fermions.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
